Tip Calculator
Use this free tip calculator to work out your tip, the total bill and what each person pays. Add optional sales tax, split the bill or check a receipt with the reverse calculator.
How to use it
- Type the bill amount before tip. Use the pre-tax subtotal if you want the tip on that figure.
- Pick a tip percentage, or choose Custom and type your own.
- Enter how many people are splitting the bill. Leave it at 1 if you are paying alone.
- Tick "Add sales tax" if the tax is not already in your bill, and enter the rate for your area.
Worked example
Say the bill is $84.00 before tax, four people are sharing it, and you want to leave a 20% tip. No sales tax is added.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Tip | $84.00 × 20% | $16.80 |
| Total bill | $84.00 + $16.80 | $100.80 |
| Tip per person | $16.80 ÷ 4 | $4.20 |
| Each person pays | $100.80 ÷ 4 | $25.20 |
Typical tipping in the US
Customs vary by region and by the service you receive. These figures are general guides, not rules.
| Situation | Common range |
|---|---|
| Restaurant table service | 18% to 20%, more for exceptional service |
| Takeaway or counter service | Optional. Often nothing, or a few dollars or about 10% for a larger order |
| Taxi or rideshare | About 15% to 20%, or round up to the next dollar |
| Hairdresser or barber | About 15% to 20% |
| Bar service | $1 to $2 per drink, or 15% to 20% of a larger tab |
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
In most US restaurants, 18% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for good service. Go higher for exceptional service and lower if service was poor. Tipping is customary rather than mandatory, but it is how most servers are paid.
Do I tip on the tax?
Most people tip on the pre-tax amount, and that is what this calculator does by default. Tipping on the total including tax is also common and adds a little more.
How do I split a bill fairly?
The simplest fair method is to split the total, including tip and tax, evenly. If people ordered very different amounts, split each person's own items and share the tax and tip in proportion to what each person spent.
Should I round up?
Rounding up is a convenience, not a requirement. Turn on "Round each person's share up" if you would rather pay a whole dollar amount each.
Can I work out the bill from a total that includes the tip?
Yes. Switch to the Reverse tip calculator tab if you know the final total and the tip percentage but not the bill before the tip.
How to use it
- Enter the final amount you paid, including tip and any tax.
- Pick the tip percentage that was added, or choose Custom.
- If the total includes sales tax, tick the box and enter the tax rate for your area.
- Enter how many people split the bill to see each share.
Worked example
Your card receipt shows $100.80 in total. The tip was 20% of the bill before tip, and there is no sales tax to account for.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Bill before tip | $100.80 ÷ (1 + 0.20) | $84.00 |
| Tip included | $84.00 × 20% | $16.80 |
| Check | $84.00 + $16.80 | $100.80 |
With 8.25% sales tax included in the total, the bill before tip and tax = total ÷ (1 + 0.0825 + 0.20). Tax and tip are then worked out from that bill.
Frequently asked questions
Why divide by 1.20 and not take 20% off?
The tip is 20% of the bill before tip, so the final total is the bill multiplied by 1.20. Dividing the total by 1.20 gets back to the bill. Taking 20% off the total would give a smaller, incorrect figure.
Does this assume the tip was on the pre-tax bill?
Yes. If tax is included and you tick the box, the calculator treats the tip as a percentage of the bill before tax. If your receipt shows the tip on a total that includes tax, the bill before tip will be a little lower than the result here.
Can I use this for a split bill?
Yes. Enter the number of people and the calculator shows each person's share of the total and of the bill.
About this calculator
Tip = bill × tip %. Tax = bill × tax rate (only if added). Total = bill + tax + tip. Each person's share = total ÷ number of people. Reverse: bill before tip and tax = total ÷ (1 + tax rate + tip rate). Amounts are rounded to the nearest cent.
